Arthroscopy in India

Arthroscopy (also called Arthroscopic Surgery) is a surgical procedure in which an examination and treatment of damage of the interior of a joint is performed by use of Arthroscope. Arthroscope is very small video camera like instrument (in tube shape) that contains optical fibers and lenses. It is inserted (through very small incisions ) in the skin area where the joint is to be examined. Surgeons views the Internal Joint area on the Computer Monitor, and can diagnose to repair torn joint tissue and bones by small surgical instruments. It is done by an Orthopedic Surgeon expertise in doing Arthroscopic Surgeries.

Arthroscopy is reported to be a common orthopaedic procedure that is used to diagnose and treat problems in joints. The word arthroscopy comes from two Greek words: ‘artho’ meaning “joint”, and ‘scope’ meaning “look”.

Arthroscopy is undertaken using keyhole surgery, where a thin ‘scope’ is pushed into the joint (arthro-joint) to visualise the structures.

Arthroscopic surgery is most commonly performed on knee and shoulder joints, and less commonly on wrist, elbow, ankle and hip. Knee and shoulder joints are more amenable to arthroscopy because they are large enough for instruments to be manipulated around.

In traditional Surgery joints needs to be opened up fully, while in Arthroscopy only 2-3 small incisions are made. 1 for the Arthroscope and other for the surgical Instruments. Most Popular Arthroscopic Surgeries are Arthroscopic Knee Surgery, Arthroscopy Shoulder Surgery and Arthroscopic Hip Surgery, Other joints that are commonly examined and treated by Arthroscopic Surgery are the, elbow, wrist, ankle and foot.

Arthroscopy for Knee Injuries, Knee Problems

Knee arthroscopic surgery is a procedure performed through small incisions in the skin to repair injuries to tissues such as ligaments, cartilage, or bone within the knee joint area. The surgery is conducted with the aid of an arthroscope, which is a very small instrument guided by a lighted scope attached to a television monitor. Other instruments are inserted through three incisions around the knee. Arthroscopic surgeries range from minor procedures such as flushing or smoothing out bone surfaces or tissue fragments (lavage and debridement) associated with osteoarthritis, to the realignment of a dislocated knee and ligament grafting surgeries. The range of surgeries represents very different procedures, risks, and aftercare requirements.

While the clear advantages of arthrocopic surgery lie in surgery with less anesthetic, less cutting, and less recovery time, this surgery nonetheless requires a very thorough examination of the causes of knee injury or pain prior to a decision for surgery.
